The added value of acupuncture in rehabilitation
Bart Halsberghe: Veterinary Surgeon, Dipl. ECVSMR (Equine), Dipl. ABVP (Equine Practice), Cert. ISELP, cVMA, cVSMT, CERT
Acupuncture is an ancient medical technique that involves the practice of inserting fine needles into specific points through the skin for the treatment of disease, relieving pain, and improving general health. The practice of veterinary acupuncture initially started in China on horses and can be traced back thousands of years. However, most of the work done in China ended by the 11th Century and it was not until the 1970s that veterinary acupuncture was re-introduced, this time in the United States. It has grown tremendously during the past decades with increasing numbers of research studies being performed to better understand its mechanism of action and clinical benefits for a variety of conditions.
In this lecture we will discuss the current understanding as it related to its mechanism of action, explore the evidence for acupuncture in veterinary practice, and learn how to integrate it in your treatment and rehabilitation approach using case examples. The focus will be on the supportive role of acupuncture for pain management, stress relieve, healing, and optimal functioning of the patient as a whole.
